Classical Indian Sitar player Alif Laila and tabla player Suryaksha Deshpande will play a special indoor concert at the Liriodendron Mansion on Friday, March 31, 2023. 

Born and raised in Bangladesh, Alif is a resident of Maryland. She is the first Bangladeshi American professional sitar player. Her training, in the Senia Maihar Gharana, was with Ustad Mir Qasem Khan, nephew of the legendary Ustad Allaudin Khan (Ravi Shankar’s guru). She has performed in venues such as The Kennedy Center, The Bangladesh National Museum, The Sangeet Research Academy,The Purcell Room – South Bank Center. Her sitar DVD ‘Hriydayaragam’ was featured in the Smithsonian’s Women’s History Month in 2008 and ‘Strings of Resonance’ was nominated for the Best Classical Music Award in Bangladesh in 2010. Alif has composed sitar with world music, collaborated with musicians from various genres and has presented audio visual sitar concerts with her watercolor paintings internationally.

Alif is the founder of Sitar Niketan music school in Silver Spring MD.
