Earth Day Celebration

Celebrate Earth Day at the Liriodendron Mansion with The Harford County Master Gardeners and a special living history performance by Colleen Webster as Silent Spring author Rachel Carson.

The program begins at noon on Friday, April 22, with a special live portrayal of Rachel Carson – the scientist, author, and activist whose work ignited the modern environmental movement.

Afterward, the Harford County Master Gardeners will share their knowledge and expertise including:

1:00 pm  Tree planting with Bridges Montessori School

1:30 pm  Partner with the Pollinators presentation with Diane Mitchell

2:30 – 4:00 pm  Guided tours of the Larry Franz Woodland Walk with Anne Lee

Information tables and “Ask a Master Gardener” throughout the day.

All programming is free, but reservations are required for the Rachel Carson performance. Visit for your free tickets.

All ages welcome. All activities are fully accessible. Light refreshments will be provided.

This special presentation is part of Dr. Kelly’s Liriodendron: Life, Legacy & Community – a year-long series of programs, supported by The Dresher Foundation, which explores the interests and influences of Dr. Howard Atwood Kelly – world-renowned surgeon, naturalist, philanthropist, and author, and one of the founders of Johns Hopkins Medical School and Hospital.

Special thanks to the Harford County Forestry Board for the tree donation.

Chadwick the Crab & All of His Friends – The Original Illustrations by A.R. Cohen

Chadwick the Crab & All of His Friends – The Original Illustrations by A.R. Cohen

The exhibition CHADWICK THE CRAB & ALL OF HIS FRIENDS presents a rare opportunity not only to view the stunning original illustrations from the beloved children’s book series but to also purchase them.

The 92 watercolor, and pen and ink illustrations were created by Harford County artist A.R. Cohen. Alan began his collaboration with the author Priscilla Cummings in 1986 with the publication of CHADWICK THE CRAB. Eight other books have followed in addition to an activities book and an anthology of four of the Chadwick books. Three of the series focus on Chesapeake Bay wildfowl. There is a bookish blue heron who stars in OSWALD AND THE TIMBERDOODLES, a pair of enterprising egrets featured in SID AND SAL’S FAMOUS CHANNEL MARKER DINER, and there’s TOULOUSE THE STORY OF A CANADIAN GOOSE.

This exhibition will be enjoyed by children (and adults!) of all ages and will open at The Liriodendron Mansion on Sunday November 14 from 11:00 to 3:00.  The show will be open every Wednesday, from November 17 through December 29 from 1:00 to 6:00 and Sunday December 12 from 11:00 to 3:00.

Along with the illustrations, books will be on sale and the illustrator A.R. Cohen and the author Priscilla Cummings will be there to sign them.

Don’t miss this charming and fun exhibition and the chance to purchase one of these engaging works of art! All sales benefit The Liriodendron Foundation.

The Bel Air Library will hold Storytime at the Liriodendron on Wednesday November 17 and Wednesday December 8 at 10:30 am.
